Lac vaccinum

A recognised but minor homeopathic remedy; no human trials support it, and diluted remedies test no better than placebo.

Home

What is Lac vaccinum? Lac vaccinum is a homeopathic remedy made from cow's milk. Its Latin name is Lac Bos taurus. Homeopaths have used it for problems they link to milk, such as an upset stomach after a glass of milk. The milk is diluted over and over, with hard shaking at each step. At the common 30C strength, no milk is left. You take sugar pellets or water that carry the idea of milk, not milk itself. Here is the short verdict. Homeopaths have used it for well over a century, but long use is not proof of effect. Trials of homeopathic remedies do not show any result beyond placebo (a dummy treatment). How does Lac vaccinum work? The honest answer comes first. There is no known way this can act in the body at normal strengths. Homeopaths follow the idea of "like cures like". They believe a diluted form of milk can ease problems that milk seems to cause. They also believe the shaking step leaves a trace of the milk in the water. Chemistry does not back that idea. Past about 12C, not one molecule of the starting milk is likely to remain. So any change you feel is most likely the placebo effect, which means feeling better because you expect to. What forms does Lac vaccinum come in? You will most often find small sugar pellets. They melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Strengths are marked with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more dilution steps. At 30C and above, no milk remains. Where it comes from: Homeopathy began in Germany around the year 1800. Milk remedies came later, mostly from American homeopaths in the 1800s. Lac vaccinum shows up in old homeopathic books from that time. It stayed a minor remedy. It has never been used as widely as the big names in the system.

Helps

What does Lac vaccinum help with? Stomach upset after drinking milk: This is the classic homeopathic picture for this remedy. No human trial has tested it for milk-related gut upset. If milk reliably upsets you, a doctor can check for lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) or milk allergy. Headaches and migraine attacks: Old homeopathic books list head pain that comes with sickness and a dislike of milk. No trial has tested this remedy for headache. Frequent or severe headaches need a doctor, not a home remedy. Too much or too little breast milk: Homeopaths have used it both ways, depending on the strength chosen. There is no trial evidence for either use. Feeding problems in a newborn need fast help from a midwife, health visitor or doctor. Constipation: Some homeopathic texts list hard, dry stools under this remedy. No study supports that. Water, fibre, movement and, if needed, a proven laxative are the tested options. Feeling worse after dairy foods: Homeopaths pick this remedy when milk seems to be the trigger. No trial has tested it. Cutting out dairy for a short trial, with a doctor's advice, tells you far more.

Where it comes from:

Homeopathy began in Germany around the year 1800. Milk remedies came later, mostly from American homeopaths in the 1800s.

Lac vaccinum shows up in old homeopathic books from that time. It stayed a minor remedy. It has never been used as widely as the big names in the system.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Lac vaccinum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Lac vaccinum?

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cow's milk and the pack is a low dilution such as 1X to 6X, because these can still hold milk protein.
  • Do not use if you have ever had anaphylaxis (a whole-body allergic reaction that can stop your breathing) to milk, in any strength of this remedy.
  • Do not use if you have galactosaemia (a rare inherited illness in which the body cannot break down a milk sugar), because the pellets are usually made of lactose.
  • Do not use if you are severely intolerant to lactose (milk sugar) and cannot find a lactose-free form.
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or young child who has not been seen by a doctor.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of it as a swap for a medicine your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms last more than a week, get worse, or keep coming back. Get help the same day for a baby or child who will not feed, is not gaining weight, or keeps being sick. Call emergency services straight away for signs of a severe allergic reaction: swelling of the lips, face or throat, a spreading rash, or trouble breathing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
