Kalamegha

Traditional tier T3: classical use in Ayurveda, Siddha and Chinese medicine. Evidence grade C: small human trials point to mild, short-term relief of cold

Home

What is Kalamegha? Kalamegha is a very bitter leaf used in Ayurveda. Its plant name is Andrographis paniculata. People also call it Kalmegh, green chiretta, or king of bitters. In Ayurveda, Kalamegha is a single drug. That means one herb used on its own, not a blend of many herbs. It is used most often for fever, colds, weak digestion, and to support the liver. The short verdict: small human trials suggest it may ease cold and sore throat symptoms a bit. The proof is fair, not strong. Long use in Ayurveda is not the same as proof that a herb works, and this page keeps the two apart. How does Kalamegha work? No one can say for sure how Kalamegha works in the body. Lab work shows its bitter compounds may calm inflammation (swelling and heat in body tissue). They may also prompt the body's germ defences to react sooner. Some lab work also suggests it helps bile flow, which may be why it has a name as a liver herb. Most of this work was done in test tubes and in animals. That does not prove the same thing happens in a person. Treat these as ideas, not facts. In Ayurveda it is read as a cooling, bitter, drying herb that clears heat from the blood and liver. What forms does Kalamegha come in? Kalamegha comes in several forms. Dried leaf powder, called churna, is the oldest one. Tablets and capsules of plain powder are common. Fixed-strength extracts are what most trials used. A bitter water brew, called kwatha, is made by boiling the leaf. Fresh leaf juice is still used in parts of India. Choose a product that names the plant in full and states the andrographolide content. Where it comes from: Kalamegha has a long record in Ayurveda as a fever and liver herb. Old texts group it with the bitter, heat-clearing plants. It is also used in Siddha and Unani practice in India. In China the same plant is called chuan xin lian and has its own long record there. During past fever outbreaks in India it was a household remedy.

Helps

What does Kalamegha help with? Common cold and flu-like illness: This is the best studied use. Pooled trials suggest people taking Kalamegha felt better a little sooner than those on a dummy pill. The effect is modest and the trials were small. It is a symptom helper, not a cure. Sore throat and cough: Trials that measured cough and throat pain scores found small gains over a dummy pill. Most courses ran 3 to 7 days . Quality of the studies was mixed, so read the result as promising, not settled. Fever: Fever is the classic Ayurvedic use, going back centuries. Human trial proof for fever on its own is thin. If a fever lasts more than three days, or goes above 39C (102F), see a doctor rather than treating it yourself. Poor appetite and slow digestion: Bitter herbs are used to wake up appetite and bile flow, and Kalamegha is a strong bitter. This use rests on tradition and on lab work, not on good human trials. In large doses the same bitterness can upset the stomach. Liver support (traditional use): Ayurveda uses Kalamegha for liver heat and for jaundice (yellow skin and eyes). Animal work is supportive. We could not find human trials strong enough to guide advice. Odd rare reports also link the herb to raised liver test results, so people with liver disease should stay away. Skin problems with heat and itching (traditional use): Old texts use it for hot, itchy, weeping skin, taken by mouth. This is tradition only. No sound human trials back it. Intestinal worms (traditional use): Kalamegha appears in old worm remedies. Modern drugs for worms are safe, cheap and proven, so there is no good reason to pick the herb instead.

Where it comes from:

Kalamegha has a long record in Ayurveda as a fever and liver herb. Old texts group it with the bitter, heat-clearing plants.

It is also used in Siddha and Unani practice in India. In China the same plant is called chuan xin lian and has its own long record there. During past fever outbreaks in India it was a household remedy.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Kalamegha need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Kalamegha?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, or if you are trying to get pregnant. Animal work raises concern about harm to a pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as we do not know what passes into breast milk.
  • Do not use if you have had an organ transplant, or take any medicine that damps down your immune system. This one is absolute.
  • Do not use if you have an autoimmune disease (a condition where the body attacks its own tissue), such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, unless your specialist agrees.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease, or if a blood test has shown raised liver results.
  • Do not use if you have gallstones or a blocked bile duct (the tube that carries bile from the liver to the gut).
  • Do not use if you take warfarin or any other blood thinner, unless your doctor has said it is safe.
  • Do not use if you have surgery booked in the next two weeks, because of the bleeding risk.
  • Do not use if you have ever had a rash, swelling or breathing trouble after taking Kalamegha or a related plant.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a child under 12 without advice from a doctor.
  • Do not use if you have low blood pressure that already makes you dizzy.

When should you see a doctor?

Stop the herb and get medical help the same day if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pain over your right ribs, unusual bruising or bleeding, or a spreading rash.

Call emergency services now if your face, lips or throat swell, or you struggle to breathe. That is a severe allergic reaction.

See a doctor rather than self-treating if a fever lasts more than three days, if you are short of breath, or if a sore throat comes with a stiff neck or trouble swallowing.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
