Huai Hua San

A long-standing staple of Chinese medicine for bleeding piles, but human trial evidence is essentially absent.

What is Huai Hua San? Huai Hua San is a Chinese herbal powder. It is sold as one single combined product, not as loose separate herbs. In Chinese medicine it is used for bright red blood in the stool and for bleeding piles (swollen veins around the back passage). It is also known as Sophora Japonica Flower Powder. Its main herb is the dried flower bud of the pagoda tree. Three other herbs are mixed in with it. It has been used in China for about 900 years . But there are no good human trials of it. Long traditional use is not proof that something works, so treat this as a folk remedy and not as a proven treatment. Blood in the stool has many causes. Some of them are serious. Get it checked by a doctor before you try any herb for it. How does Huai Hua San work? No one has shown how Huai Hua San works in the body. The old texts say it cools "wind-heat" in the gut and stops bleeding. In plain terms, the herbs were chosen to calm heat and irritation in the lower bowel. Lab work shows the flower bud holds compounds that can tighten tissue and may help small blood vessels hold up better. That lab work is not the same as proof in people. No trial has tested whether the formula slows bleeding in a real patient. What forms does Huai Hua San come in? Most people take it as granules that you stir into hot water. Some shops sell it as a loose powder or as small pills. The old way was a fine powder, about 6 grams, taken with warm rice water. Today the granules are the easiest form to find. Check the label before you buy. You want the full four-herb formula, not the flower bud on its own. Where it comes from: Huai Hua San first appears in a Chinese formula book from about 1132 CE. The book is Pu Ji Ben Shi Fang, written by the doctor Xu Shuwei. It has stayed in use in China ever since for bleeding from the back passage. It is taught in modern Chinese medicine schools as a standard formula for this problem.

Helps

What does Huai Hua San help with? Bleeding piles (swollen veins around the back passage): This is the main traditional use. Chinese doctors have given this formula for bleeding piles for centuries. There are no published trials in people that test it against a dummy treatment. So we cannot say whether it helps or not. Bright red blood in the stool: Tradition uses it when the blood is bright red and comes before or with the stool. This symptom needs a doctor, not a herb. Bright red blood can come from piles, but it can also come from a tear, from bowel disease or from cancer. Pain and bleeding from a small tear at the back passage: Practitioners sometimes use it here because the pattern looks the same to them. No human study has looked at this use. Treat it as tradition only. Bleeding with bowel inflammation (swelling and soreness in the gut): Some Chinese clinic reports describe it as an add-on for bloody stools in bowel disease. Those reports are small and not controlled, so they cannot show real effect. If you have a diagnosed bowel disease, speak to your own doctor first.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
