Heloderma horridum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials test this remedy, and 30C pills hold no venom. Traditional tier T1: a small, named homeopathic remedy used

Home

What is Heloderma horridum? Heloderma horridum is a homeopathic remedy made from Gila monster venom. The Gila monster is a large, slow lizard from Mexico and the US south-west. Homeopaths give the remedy for cold limbs, numb skin and poor balance. The venom is watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. This is called serial dilution. At 30C, the usual strength, none of the venom is left in the pill. Tests in people do not show that it beats a dummy pill. Homeopaths have used it since the late 1800s, so it has a real history. But long use is not proof that something works, and that point holds for this whole page. How does Heloderma horridum work? There is no known way for a 30C pill to act on the body, because nothing from the venom is left in it. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like". A thing that causes signs in a well person is used to treat the same signs in a sick person. Raw venom from this lizard can cause cold skin, numb limbs, shaking and a weak, unsteady walk. So homeopaths pick this remedy for people who feel that way. The second idea is that shaking and watering down make a remedy act more strongly, not less. Chemistry does not support that idea. Any change people notice is best explained by the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to) and by time passing. What forms does Heloderma horridum come in? You will find it as small sugar pills, tiny granules, or liquid drops. Common strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. The letter C means each step dilutes the mix one part in a hundred. A higher number means more steps, so even less source material. Low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X are watered down far less. These may still hold traces of venom. They are not sold for home use and should not be taken without medical advice. The mother tincture is the first, undiluted liquid made from the venom. It is a poison and is not a consumer product. Where it comes from: Homeopaths in North America added this remedy in the late 1800s. It came from a "proving", where healthy people take a dose and write down what they feel. The notes from that work describe deep cold, numbness, crawling skin and an unsteady walk. Those notes still guide how homeopaths choose it today. It has always been a small, rarely used remedy. It is not a staple of the system, and no other healing tradition uses lizard venom this way.

Helps

What does Heloderma horridum help with? Cold hands and feet: Homeopaths pick this remedy for people who feel icy cold and cannot get warm. No human trial has tested it for this. Cold hands and feet can also come from thyroid trouble, anaemia (low iron in the blood) or poor circulation, so ask a doctor for a check. Numbness or tingling in the limbs: The old proving notes describe numb, wooden-feeling arms and legs, so homeopaths match the remedy to that picture. There are no trials in people. New or spreading numbness needs a doctor, not a remedy. Poor balance and an unsteady walk: This is the best-known use in homeopathy, based only on the proving notes. No study in people has tested it. Balance problems can point to nerve, ear or brain conditions, so get them checked early. Crawling or prickling feelings on the skin: Homeopaths use it when the skin feels like insects are moving on it. This comes from case notes, not from trials. No human evidence supports it. Feeling cold all over, even in a warm room: The remedy is chosen for deep, inner cold that blankets do not fix. There is no trial evidence. A thyroid test is a sensible first step with a doctor. Tiredness and weak limbs after an illness: Some homeopaths use it for slow recovery with cold, heavy limbs. Nothing has been tested in people. Long-lasting tiredness deserves a proper medical review.

Where it comes from:

Homeopaths in North America added this remedy in the late 1800s.

Who should avoid Heloderma horridum?

  • Do not ever swallow raw Gila monster venom or the mother tincture (the first, undiluted liquid). This is a full ban, for everyone.
  • Do not use low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X at home, because these may still hold traces of venom.
  • Do not use low strengths if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, apixaban or aspirin.
  • Do not use low strengths if you take medicine for diabetes (high blood sugar), such as exenatide, insulin or metformin.
  • Do not use this in place of care for new numbness, weakness or balance trouble that a doctor has not checked.
  • Do not stop or cut back any prescribed medicine in order to take this.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is fine.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child without asking a doctor first.
  • Do not use lactose (milk sugar) pills if your body cannot handle lactose; check the label.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol or are being treated for alcohol use.
  • Do not use it as first aid for any real lizard or snake bite.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor soon if numbness, tingling, weak limbs or balance trouble is new, spreading, or lasts more than a few days.

Also see a doctor if you feel cold all the time, are very tired for weeks, or your symptoms get worse while using this.

Call emergency services right away for sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face, slurred speech, chest pain or trouble breathing. Get urgent hospital care for any real lizard or snake bite.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
