Hai Gou Shen

A long-standing staple of one tradition, Chinese medicine, but no published human trials support any use, so the evidence grade is insufficient.

What is Hai Gou Shen? Hai Gou Shen is the dried penis and testes of the seal. It is used as a single drug in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many labels say "herb", but this is an animal product, not a plant. Practitioners class it as a warming kidney yang tonic. They give it mainly to men. It is used for low sex drive, erection problems, and cold, weak limbs. You can buy it as dried slices, powder, capsules, pills and medicinal wine. It nearly always sits inside a formula with other ingredients. Parts from dog, deer or ox are often sold under the same or a similar name, so the packet may not match the label. The evidence verdict is simple. Hai Gou Shen has a long record inside one tradition, but we could find no published human trials of it. Long traditional use is not proof that something works. This page makes that point once, not again in every section below. Seals are protected animals in many countries. Buying or importing this material may be illegal where you live. How does Hai Gou Shen work? The honest answer is that nobody has shown how it works in people. The studies have not been done. Traditional theory says it warms the kidney and boosts yang. It is also said to supplement the essence. In that system, kidney yang is a pattern of body function, not the organ your doctor scans. The idea is that it adds warmth and drive to someone who feels cold, tired and sexually flat. A modern guess starts with the tissue itself. Mammal sex organs hold small amounts of steroid hormones, such as androgens (male sex hormones). They also hold proteins and fats. Does any of that survive drying and digestion in amounts that change how you feel? Nobody has tested it. Treat any claim about how it works as a theory, not a finding. What forms does Hai Gou Shen come in? Hai Gou Shen comes in a handful of forms: Dried whole or sliced tissue, softened and cooked into soups or decoctions (simmered water extracts). Powder, taken in capsules or stirred into a drink. Patent pills and capsules, where it is one of several ingredients. Medicinal wine, where the dried tissue soaks in strong spirits for weeks. A practical note. This is one of the most faked items in Chinese medicine, and cheaper animal parts are swapped in all the time. Some products hold no seal material at all. A few have been found spiked with prescription drugs for erection problems. Where it comes from: Hai Gou Shen shows up in Chinese medical writing from about the Song dynasty onward. Later drug books list it too, including works from the Ming and Qing periods. It sits with the animal yang tonics, next to deer antler and dog penis. It was a prestige remedy. It cost a lot, and it was tied to vitality in older men. Today its use is limited by price, by fakes and by wildlife protection law. Many practitioners now use plant tonics instead.

Helps

What does Hai Gou Shen help with? Low sex drive: This is the main traditional use, given to men described as having "kidney yang deficiency" — feeling cold, tired and low in drive. No human trial has tested Hai Gou Shen for sex drive, so the support is traditional only. Erectile difficulty: Traditional texts recommend it here, usually inside a formula rather than alone. There is no trial evidence. Erectile difficulty can be the first sign of heart or blood vessel disease or of diabetes, so see a doctor rather than self-treating. Feeling cold in the limbs and lower back: Warming cold hands, feet and lower back is a classic indication in the older texts. No modern study has looked at this. Persistent cold intolerance can point to an underactive thyroid (a gland in the neck that sets your body's pace) and deserves a blood test. Tiredness with low back and knee weakness: Traditionally used for older adults with this pattern. Evidence is limited to that traditional record; no laboratory or human work supports it specifically. Male fertility concerns: Folk reputation rather than tested use. No human fertility trial of Hai Gou Shen has been published. Fertility problems need proper testing of both partners, not a tonic.

Hai Gou Shen comes in a handful of forms:

Dried whole or sliced tissue, softened and cooked into soups or decoctions (simmered water extracts).

Where it comes from:

Hai Gou Shen shows up in Chinese medical writing from about the Song dynasty onward.

Who should avoid Hai Gou Shen?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, as the hormone content is unknown and untested in pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Never give this to a child or teenager.
  • Do not use if you have prostate cancer, breast cancer or any other hormone-sensitive cancer (a cancer whose growth is driven by sex hormones).
  • Do not use if you take medicines that block male hormones, such as bicalutamide or finasteride, or hormone treatments for breast cancer such as tamoxifen.
  • Do not use if you take nitrates for chest pain, such as glyceryl trinitrate, because counterfeit male tonic products have been found spiked with drugs that can crash your blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate that makes it hard to pass urine).
  • Do not use if you have high blood pressure that is not controlled.
  • Avoid it if a practitioner has told you that you have a heat pattern, or if you already run hot, flushed, thirsty or sleepless.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to seal, fish or other marine animal products.
  • Never buy or import this product where seals are a protected species, because possession may be a criminal offence.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor before you start, not after, if you are taking this for erection problems or low drive. Both can be early warning signs of heart disease, blocked blood vessels, diabetes or an underactive thyroid (a gland in the neck that sets your body's pace), and those need proper testing.

Stop and get medical help the same day if you develop chest pain, a pounding or irregular heartbeat, sudden severe headache, dizziness or fainting, or an erection lasting more than four hours.

Get urgent care if you have signs of an allergic reaction: a spreading rash, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing.

Book an ordinary appointment if you notice new breast tenderness or swelling, worsening urinary problems, blood pressure that has climbed, or tiredness that keeps getting worse despite taking it.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
