Guaiacum officinale

A long-standing staple of homeopathic practice for stiff joints, but human trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Guaiacum officinale? Guaiacum is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from the resin (sticky sap) of the lignum vitae tree, which grows in the Caribbean and northern South America. It is also sold as guaiac resin. Homeopaths give it most often for sore, stiff joints, for gout pain, and for sore throats with swollen tonsils. It comes as sugar pills or drops. The remedy is watered down again and again, step by step. At 30C there is in effect none of the tree resin left in the pill. Trials have not shown that it works better than a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works, and that holds here too. How does Guaiacum officinale work? There is no known way for a 30C pill to act on the body, because almost nothing of the plant is left in it. Homeopathy works from an old idea called "like cures like". The claim is that a very small dose of something that causes symptoms can ease the same symptoms. Guaiacum was chosen because the raw resin can irritate the gut and skin. Homeopaths also say that the watering-down steps leave behind a kind of imprint of the plant. Lab work has not shown such an imprint, and chemistry does not predict one. Raw guaiac resin is a different matter. It does hold real plant chemicals that can act on the body, and it can also cause harm. What forms does Guaiacum officinale come in? Most people meet it as small sugar pills or as liquid drops. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. A higher number means more watering down. At 30C there is in effect none of the source resin left. Lower strengths, such as 3X or 6X, and the mother tincture still hold some plant matter. These can upset the stomach. The drops are made with alcohol. Herbal shops also sell raw guaiac resin and wood chips for teas. That is a herbal product, not a homeopathic one. It is far stronger and carries more risk. Where it comes from: Spanish ships brought lignum vitae wood to Europe in the early 1500s. Doctors of that day boiled the wood and gave the drink for syphilis and for aching joints. By the 1700s it was a well known gout and rheumatism remedy in Europe. It was also chewed for sore gums. Homeopaths took it up in the 1800s. Guaiacum has kept a small but steady place in homeopathic reference books ever since, mainly for stiff joints and sore throats.

Helps

What does Guaiacum officinale help with? Joint pain and stiffness: This is the best known use in homeopathy. Books point to joints that feel hot, sore and hard to move, and that get worse in damp weather. No human trial has tested homeopathic Guaiacum for joint pain. Gout pain: Homeopaths use it for a hot, tender big toe or ankle joint. The raw wood was a European gout drink for centuries. There is no trial evidence, and gout needs proper medical care to protect your joints and kidneys. Sore throat with swollen tonsils: Homeopathic books list it for a raw, burning throat with large tonsils and bad breath. This is tradition only. A throat infection with fever may need a doctor and sometimes antibiotics. Stiff neck and shoulders: Traditional use covers a stiff, drawing pain in the neck and shoulder blades. Nothing beyond case reports and remedy books supports this. Growing pains in children: Some homeopaths give it for aching limbs in children. This use rests on remedy books alone. Give a child nothing without asking a doctor or pharmacist first.

Where it comes from:

Spanish ships brought lignum vitae wood to Europe in the early 1500s.

Who should avoid Guaiacum officinale?

  • Do not use if you are allergic to guaiac resin or to lignum vitae wood.
  • Never use this in place of prescribed treatment for gout, arthritis or a throat infection.
  • Do not take the mother tincture, low strengths such as 3X, or raw guaiac resin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take the mother tincture or raw resin if you take warfarin or another blood thinner.
  • Do not take the mother tincture or raw resin if you have a peptic ulcer (a sore in the stomach lining) or inflammatory bowel disease (long-term gut swelling).
  • Do not take the mother tincture or raw resin if you have liver disease or kidney disease.
  • Avoid the alcohol-based liquid drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or if you are avoiding alcohol for any reason.
  • Do not give the alcohol-based drops to a child; ask a doctor or pharmacist before giving a child any form.
  • Do not keep taking it if a rash, itching or any swelling starts.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within a day if a joint is hot, red and badly swollen, or if you have a fever with joint pain. That can mean an infected joint, which needs fast treatment.

See a doctor if a sore throat lasts more than two days, comes with a high fever, or makes swallowing hard.

Get urgent help, by ambulance if needed, if your lips, face or throat swell, or if you feel short of breath or faint after taking it. That can be a severe allergic reaction.

Also book a review if joint pain keeps getting worse, if you have gout attacks more than once or twice a year, or if you notice easy bruising or bleeding while taking the tincture.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
