What is Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia)? Di Huang — specifically Sheng Di Huang in its raw form — is the root of Rehmannia glutinosa, a flowering plant native to northern China. It is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years . The raw form is distinct from the prepared (cooked) form, Shu Di Huang, and is valued for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties rather than the warming, tonifying qualities of the processed version. How does Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia) work? Raw Rehmannia is rich in iridoid glycosides, particularly catalpol, which appears to support blood sugar regulation, protect nerve tissue, and dampen inflammatory signaling. Its polysaccharides help modulate immune activity, calming overactive responses seen in autoimmune conditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine views it as an herb that clears heat from the blood, replenishes fluids, and nourishes the Yin — a framework that aligns well with its modern understood effects on inflammation, adrenal stress, and hormonal balance. What forms does Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia) come in? Traditional use favors water decoctions (boiled root tea), which extract both the glycosides and polysaccharides effectively. Standardized extracts in capsule or granule form are more convenient and better suited to consistent dosing. Tinctures are available but less traditional. When purchasing, look for products standardized to catalpol content or sourced from certified-quality Chinese herbal suppliers. Where it comes from: Rehmannia root has appeared in Chinese medical texts since the Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), compiled around 200 CE, where it was classified as a superior herb for nourishing the body and extending life. It remains a cornerstone ingredient in classical formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), still widely prescribed today across East Asia for kidney deficiency, hormonal imbalance, and age-related decline.

Helps

What does Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia) help with? Blood sugar and diabetes management: Rehmannia's polysaccharides and catalpol help the body use insulin more effectively and reduce fasting blood sugar levels. Several clinical trials in people with type 2 diabetes have shown meaningful reductions in blood glucose and improvements in insulin sensitivity when Rehmannia-based formulas are used alongside standard care. Chronic inflammation: Raw Rehmannia has well-documented anti-inflammatory effects — it lowers key inflammatory markers and calms the overactive immune signaling seen in chronic inflammatory diseases. This makes it particularly useful for conditions where long-term inflammation is driving symptoms, such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel conditions. Kidney and adrenal support: In TCM, the kidney system governs hormonal balance, stress resilience, and aging — and Rehmannia is its primary tonic herb. Modern research supports this: it appears to protect kidney tissue, reduce markers of kidney stress, and help regulate the adrenal stress response. Autoimmune conditions (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis): Rehmannia-based formulas have been studied in both lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, showing reductions in disease activity, inflammatory markers, and symptom severity. It is thought to work by calming immune overactivity without fully suppressing the immune system. Hormonal imbalance and menopause symptoms: Formulas containing Rehmannia, especially Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, are among the most studied TCM preparations for menopause. Clinical trials have shown improvements in hot flashes, night sweats, sleep, and overall quality of life in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Bone density and osteoporosis: Rehmannia-containing formulas have shown potential to slow bone mineral density loss, particularly in postmenopausal women. The herb appears to support bone-building cells while reducing bone breakdown, making it a meaningful complement to conventional osteoporosis care. Anemia and blood deficiency: In TCM, raw Rehmannia is a classic remedy for blood deficiency — symptoms like pallor, dizziness, and fatigue from low blood volume or poor blood quality. It is thought to support the production of healthy blood cells and improve circulation of nutrients through the body. Cognitive support and brain health: Catalpol, Rehmannia's key glycoside, has shown neuroprotective effects in early research — it appears to protect brain cells from stress-related damage and may support memory and cognitive function. This is an emerging area with promising early findings. Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis): Raw Rehmannia is frequently used in TCM for inflammatory skin conditions, often in combination with other cooling herbs. Its ability to reduce systemic inflammation and cool what TCM calls 'blood heat' maps onto skin conditions driven by immune overactivity. Chronic fatigue: By supporting adrenal function and replenishing what TCM calls Yin deficiency — a state of depletion often linked to chronic stress and overwork — Rehmannia is used to rebuild energy reserves over time. It works gradually rather than as a stimulant.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
