Cang Zhu is the dried underground stem (rhizome) of Atractylodes lancea, a plant in the daisy family. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is given for a heavy, bloated belly, poor appetite, loose stools, and achy joints in damp or cold weather. It is a single herb, and it is almost always used as one part of a larger formula.
Here is the short verdict. Good human trials of Cang Zhu on its own are hard to find, so its uses rest mainly on long traditional use. Long use tells you what healers valued a herb for, but it does not prove the herb works.
The herb is warming and drying by nature. That is why TCM writers warn against it for people who already feel dry, hot, or worn out. Talk to a trained practitioner before you start it.
No one has shown how Cang Zhu works in the human body. What follows is theory, not proven fact.
In TCM terms, the herb is said to "dry damp" and "wake up the spleen". In plain words, that means it was used when the belly feels full, heavy and sluggish. The same idea covers joint pain that feels worse in wet weather.
Lab and animal work points to the aromatic oil in the root. In test tubes and in rodents, parts of that oil have calmed gut spasms and reduced swelling. Those results are early, and they do not tell you what happens in a person.
The most common form is dried sliced root, boiled in water to make a strong tea (decoction). This is how it is used in most TCM clinics.
You may also see it in ready-made granules that dissolve in hot water, in pills or capsules, and in liquid tinctures. Bran-fried Cang Zhu is a processed version that TCM considers gentler on the stomach.
In practice, single-herb products are rare. Most shop-bought items are multi-herb formulas with Cang Zhu inside.
Cang Zhu appears in Chinese medical writing well over a thousand years ago. Early texts grouped it with Bai Zhu, a related root, before the two were clearly split apart.
It became a staple for damp-type belly and joint complaints. Japanese Kampo and Korean traditional medicine, both shaped by Chinese sources, use it as well.
Stop the herb and get medical help straight away if you develop a rash, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing. Also stop and see a doctor if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, if your urine turns dark, or if you feel faint, shaky or confused, which can be signs of low blood sugar.
Book a normal appointment if your bloating, appetite loss or loose stools last more than two weeks, or if they keep coming back. See a doctor promptly for blood in your stool, black stools, ongoing vomiting, fever, or weight loss you did not plan. These need a proper diagnosis, not a herb.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
