What is Belladonna (30C)? Belladonna 30C is a homeopathic preparation derived from the Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) plant. It is prepared through a process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) — repeated 30 times in a 1:100 ratio — resulting in a remedy that contains no detectable alkaloid molecules from the original plant. It is one of the most widely used remedies in classical homeopathy, particularly for acute conditions. The remedy is governed by homeopathic principles rather than pharmacological ones, and its mechanism of action — if any — remains scientifically unexplained. How does Belladonna (30C) work? According to homeopathic theory, Belladonna 30C works on the principle of 'like cures like' — that a substance capable of producing symptoms in a healthy person can, in extreme dilution, stimulate the body to resolve similar symptoms. The 30C dilution is so extreme that standard chemistry finds no measurable active compound; homeopaths argue that water retains a 'memory' or energetic imprint of the original substance. Conventional science does not accept this mechanism, and the remedy's effects, where observed, are not distinguishable from placebo in most controlled trials. What forms does Belladonna (30C) come in? Most commonly available as small sucrose or lactose pellets that dissolve under the tongue. Liquid preparations (drops) and compressed tablets are also available. Pellets are the traditional and most popular form for acute use. Where it comes from: Atropa belladonna has a long and complex history in European medicine — used as an anesthetic, cosmetic (Renaissance women used it to dilate pupils), and poison. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, was one of the first to document its homeopathic use in the early 1800s, including its application in treating scarlet fever epidemics. It remains one of the foundational ('polychrest') remedies in classical homeopathy worldwide.

Helps

What does Belladonna (30C) help with? Sudden high fever in children and adults: Belladonna 30C is the most classically indicated homeopathic remedy for fevers that come on suddenly, are intense, and accompanied by flushed red skin, dry heat, and possibly dilated pupils. Homeopaths select it when the fever appears to 'ignite' quickly rather than building gradually. Evidence from clinical trials is limited and mixed, but it is one of the most studied remedies in pediatric homeopathy research. Throbbing or pounding headaches: Homeopathic tradition reserves Belladonna for headaches that are described as throbbing, hammering, or pulsating — often worse with light, noise, or movement, and better with pressure. This pattern is thought to mirror the vasodilatory effects the raw plant produces, applied homeopathically in reverse. No rigorous clinical trials have specifically confirmed this use. Acute ear pain (earache): Among the most popular uses in pediatric homeopathy, Belladonna 30C is selected for ear pain that is sudden, severe, and accompanied by warmth and redness around the ear. A small number of clinical studies have examined homeopathy broadly for otitis media, with inconsistent results that do not clearly support this specific remedy. Sore throat with redness and swelling: Homeopaths use Belladonna for sore throats that appear inflamed, bright red, and painful to swallow — symptoms that resemble the flushed, hot presentation the plant itself can cause. This is a traditional indication with very limited modern clinical evidence specific to the remedy. Sunstroke or heat-related headache: Belladonna has a strong traditional homeopathic association with conditions triggered or worsened by sun exposure — including head pain after being in the heat. This aligns with the plant's historical pharmacological profile, though no clinical trials have tested Belladonna 30C specifically for this indication. Acute tonsillitis symptoms: When tonsils appear suddenly swollen, red, and hot — particularly in children — Belladonna is a first-line homeopathic choice. European homeopathic practitioners have used it for this purpose for over two centuries. Clinical evidence for homeopathy in tonsillitis specifically is very sparse. Teething pain with inflammation: Belladonna is often found in combination homeopathic teething products alongside Chamomilla. It is selected when there is redness, heat, or apparent throbbing discomfort around the gums. Notably, the FDA has previously issued warnings about some homeopathic teething tablets due to inconsistent manufacturing leading to measurable belladonna alkaloids — not an issue in properly manufactured 30C products. Restless sleep with vivid dreams or fever: Belladonna is classically indicated in homeopathy for sleep disturbance tied to fever or acute illness — including startling, night terrors, or vivid frightening dreams during a febrile state. This is a traditional use with no specific clinical trial support.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A homeopathic remedy made from the Atropa belladonna plant, diluted to 30C (a standard homeopathic potency) so that no measurable plant material remains.
  • Main uses: Traditionally used in homeopathy for sudden, intense symptoms — particularly high fever, throbbing headaches, and acute inflammatory conditions that come on fast and hard.
  • Best for: Sudden high fever, Throbbing headaches, Acute ear and throat pain
  • Active ingredients: Atropa belladonna (homeopathic mother tincture, diluted to 30C), Lactose or sucrose (pellet base), Water/ethanol (liquid base)
  • Forms: Homeopathic pellets (most common), Liquid drops, Tablets
  • Time to effect: Homeopathic practitioners typically expect response within minutes to hours for acute conditions
  • Side effects: At the 30C homeopathic dilution, no pharmacologically active belladonna alkaloids are present, so classical toxicity does not apply — though homeopathic aggravations (temporary symptom flares) are occasionally reported.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
