What is Banaba? Banaba is a tropical tree (Lagerstroemia speciosa) that grows throughout the Philippines, India, and Southeast Asia. Its large, leathery leaves have been brewed as a medicinal tea for generations — traditionally used by Filipino healers to treat diabetes, kidney problems, and weight gain. Today it is sold worldwide as a standardized extract concentrated for its key active compound, corosolic acid. How does Banaba work? Banaba helps lower blood sugar through two main pathways: corosolic acid activates glucose transporters (particularly GLUT4) to help cells pull sugar out of the bloodstream more efficiently, and the ellagitannin compounds help slow how quickly carbohydrates are broken down and absorbed after meals. Together, these effects mimic some actions of insulin without being insulin itself. What forms does Banaba come in? Standardized capsule extracts (standardized to 1% corosolic acid) are the most reliable and widely used form. Traditional leaf tea is still widely consumed in the Philippines and provides a milder effect. Liquid extracts are available but potency varies. For consistent results, a standardized capsule or tablet is preferred over loose-leaf tea. Where it comes from: In the Philippines, Banaba has been used as folk medicine for hundreds of years — the leaf tea was a household remedy for 'sweet urine' (diabetes) and kidney stones long before modern interest in its blood sugar effects. It is still one of the most widely recognized herbal medicines in Filipino traditional health practice and is officially listed in the Philippine Herbal Pharmacopoeia.

Helps

What does Banaba help with? Blood sugar and prediabetes: Banaba leaf extract is traditionally used to help lower fasting blood glucose levels in people with mildly elevated blood sugar. It works by helping cells absorb glucose more efficiently, so sugar clears from the bloodstream faster after eating. Type 2 diabetes support: Banaba is used alongside — not instead of — conventional diabetes management to help keep blood sugar in a healthier range. Banaba has traditionally been used to help keep fasting blood glucose in a healthier range with regular use of standardized extracts. Insulin resistance: Corosolic acid helps activate the same glucose transport mechanism that insulin normally triggers, making it easier for muscle and fat cells to absorb blood sugar even when insulin signaling is impaired. This makes it particularly relevant for people with metabolic syndrome or early insulin resistance. Weight management: Banaba has been studied as one ingredient in a combination weight-management supplement, and is traditionally used to help reduce fat accumulation and support modest weight loss — possibly by reducing the blood sugar swings that drive cravings and hunger. It is not a standalone weight-loss treatment but works well as part of a broader metabolic support approach. Post-meal blood sugar spikes: Ellagitannins in Banaba slow the breakdown of dietary carbohydrates in the gut, which flattens the blood sugar curve after carb-heavy meals. Taking it just before eating is specifically used for this purpose. Metabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome involves a cluster of issues — high blood sugar, excess belly fat, poor cholesterol, and elevated blood pressure — and Banaba addresses several of these at once. Its blood sugar and lipid effects make it a natural fit for this condition. Kidney and urinary health: Traditional use for kidney stones and urinary infections has some support from its diuretic properties and antioxidant content. While modern research on this application is limited, it remains a well-documented part of its traditional profile. High cholesterol and triglycerides: Banaba is traditionally regarded as helping to modestly support healthy LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, likely tied to its broader effect on metabolic function. This benefit appears to be secondary to its primary blood sugar effects.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
