Home

What is Bacillus Proteus? Bacillus Proteus is a single homeopathic remedy, not a mix. Its Latin name is Proteus vulgaris. It is also known as the Proteus bowel nosode, one of the Bach-Paterson bowel nosodes. It is made by diluting the source germ again and again. Each step is shaken hard. At the common 30C strength, no source material is left in the dose. What you take is sugar pellets, or water with alcohol. Homeopaths reach for it when a person seems tense and prone to cramps. The usual targets are belly spasms, jumpy nerves and sudden temper. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works, and that point is not repeated later in this page. Here is the plain verdict. No human trial shows Bacillus Proteus doing more than a dummy pill. It is best seen as a tradition-based remedy with no proven drug effect. How does Bacillus Proteus work? No one has shown how it could work, because at 30C there is nothing left to act on the body. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is that a substance which causes a symptom can ease that same symptom. The second is that shaking and diluting make a remedy stronger, not weaker. Known chemistry does not support the second idea. Some homeopaths say the water keeps a trace or a pattern of the germ. No test has shown such a pattern doing anything in a person. When people feel better, time, rest, care and belief explain it well. That is a real comfort, but it is not a drug effect. What forms does Bacillus Proteus come in? It comes in a few simple forms. Small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue are the most common. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are next. Some makers press it into tablets. Strengths are written as 30C, 200C or 1M. Higher numbers mean more dilution, not more drug. Some homeopaths use LM strengths, which are drops taken more often. Where it comes from: Edward Bach studied gut germs in London in the 1920s. He made remedies from them before he moved on to his flower drops. John Paterson and Elizabeth Paterson carried the work on in Glasgow in the 1930s. They built a small set of remedies from gut germs and called them bowel nosodes. Paterson tied Proteus to sudden strain: cramps, spasm and quick temper. Bowel nosodes are still a small corner of homeopathy, and many homeopaths never use them.

Helps

What does Bacillus Proteus help with? Belly cramps and gut spasm: This is the classic reason homeopaths pick it. Paterson wrote that Proteus fits people whose gut grips and cramps under stress. No human trial has tested it for cramps. If cramps keep coming back, get the cause checked. Nervous tension and sudden outbursts of temper: Homeopaths describe the Proteus picture as strain that builds and then snaps. It is a personality picture, not a test result. There is no trial evidence for it. Talk therapy and stress care have far better support. Tension headaches: Some homeopaths use it for headaches that come with a tight, wound-up feeling. This use is tradition only. No trial has tested it. A new, severe or changing headache needs a doctor, not a remedy. Fingers that turn white and numb in the cold (Raynaud-type): Paterson linked Proteus to spasm in small blood vessels. That idea has never been tested in people. Keep your hands warm and see a doctor if fingers turn blue, break the skin, or hurt badly. Trouble falling asleep with a racing mind: It is sometimes given when tension keeps a person awake. No sleep trial exists for this remedy. Simple sleep habits and cutting late caffeine have real evidence behind them.

Where it comes from:

Edward Bach studied gut germs in London in the 1920s.

Who should avoid Bacillus Proteus?

  • Do not use it in place of an antibiotic if a doctor has told you that you have an infection
  • Do not use it to treat a fever, severe belly pain, blood in your stool, or vomiting you cannot stop; get medical care instead
  • Do not give it to a baby under one year old unless a doctor agrees
  • Do not use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use lactose pellets if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar)
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, or if you take disulfiram or metronidazole
  • Never stop or cut back a prescribed medicine so you can try this remedy

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if belly pain is severe, or if it lasts more than a day or two.

Get care the same day for a fever above 38C (100.4F), blood in your stool, black stools, or vomiting that will not stop. Do the same if a child or an older person cannot keep fluids down.

Go to an emergency room for a rigid, board-like belly, fainting, or pain that comes on suddenly and hard. Do not wait to see if the remedy helps.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
