Ampelopsis quinquefolia

Recognised but minor use in homeopathy; no human trials support it, and evidence does not separate it from placebo.

What is Ampelopsis quinquefolia? Ampelopsis quinquefolia is a homeopathy remedy. It is made from Virginia creeper, a climbing vine. Its Latin name is Parthenocissus quinquefolia. It is a single drug remedy. That means it is made from one plant, not a blend. Old homeopathy books list it for nausea, vomiting, chills and a cold, damp skin feeling. The remedy is made by watering the plant down, step by step. At 30C, no plant material is left in the pills. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill (placebo), and long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. How does Ampelopsis quinquefolia work? There is no known way this remedy could act on the body. Homeopathy has its own idea, and it is not shared by the rest of science. The idea is "like cures like". A plant that causes signs in a well person is said to ease those same signs when watered down. Each step makes the mix weaker. At 30C, the plant has been watered down so far that not one speck is left. Homeopaths say the water keeps a trace of the plant. That claim has not been shown to be true. What forms does Ampelopsis quinquefolia come in? You will most often see small sugar pills. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The higher the number, the more times the plant was watered down. A mother tincture (marked Q or Ø) is the raw plant soaked in alcohol. It is not watered down and is not a safe home product. Where it comes from: The remedy comes from American homeopathy in the 1800s. Writers of that time tested the vine and wrote up what they felt. Virginia creeper itself grows wild across eastern North America. Some Native American groups used the plant, but that use is separate from the homeopathy remedy. It has stayed a small, rarely used remedy. It is not a staple of the homeopathy medicine chest.

Helps

What does Ampelopsis quinquefolia help with? Nausea and vomiting: This is the best known use in the old books. No trial has tested the remedy for sick stomach in people. If you keep vomiting and cannot hold down water, see a doctor. Watery diarrhoea: Old texts list it for loose, watery stools with cold skin. There is no trial evidence for this use. Watery diarrhoea can dry you out fast, so get real care for it. Chills with cold, damp skin: Books from the 1800s describe a cold, clammy feeling as the key sign for this remedy. That is a written record, not a tested result. Cold, damp skin can also be a sign of shock, which needs a doctor at once. Cough and chest tightness: Some texts mention a tight chest and a dry cough. No human study has looked at this. Chest pain or trouble breathing needs urgent care, not a home remedy. Tiredness and weakness: Old provings list a heavy, worn out feeling. This is tradition only. New or lasting weakness should be checked by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

The remedy comes from American homeopathy in the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Ampelopsis quinquefolia need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Ampelopsis quinquefolia?

  • Do not use if you would swallow the raw plant, the berries or the leaves — they are poisonous and must never be eaten
  • Do not use if you are offered a mother tincture or a very low strength, as these still hold real plant matter
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, since safety has not been tested
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you would be replacing a prescribed medicine with it
  • Do not use if you have a serious illness such as heart trouble, diabetes, kidney disease or an infection, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you cannot handle lactose (milk sugar) and the pills contain it
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is alcohol-based drops

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you keep vomiting, cannot keep water down, or pass watery stools for more than a day. Get help the same day for a high fever, belly pain that grows worse, blood in vomit or stool, or little or no urine. Call for emergency help if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, or cold, clammy skin with faintness. If a child eats the berries or leaves of Virginia creeper, call poison control (a phone service for poisoning) or go to an emergency room straight away.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
