What is Abies nigra? Abies nigra is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from black spruce, a tree of eastern Canada and the northern United States. Its Latin name is Picea mariana (Abies nigra). Homeopaths give it most often for stomach upset. The classic picture is a feeling of a hard lump, like an egg, in the stomach after eating. It is also used for hiccups, wind and poor sleep in older adults. Here is the plain verdict. The remedy is watered down step by step, and at 30C none of the tree is left. Trials do not show it beats a dummy pill (placebo), and long use in one tradition is not proof that it works. How does Abies nigra work? No one has shown a way it could work in the body. Homeopathy holds that a substance which causes symptoms in a well person can ease like symptoms in a sick one, once it is watered down. The remedy is made by shaking and watering down the plant extract again and again. At 30C the odds that even one molecule (tiny particle) of spruce is left are close to zero. So any change you feel is best put down to time, care and belief. What forms does Abies nigra come in? It comes as small sugar pills, as liquid drops, or as a mother tincture (the plant extract before it is watered down). Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. Some makers also sell 6X or 3X, which are watered down less. The mother tincture and the lowest strengths still hold real plant matter. Treat those with more care than a 30C pill. Where it comes from: Black spruce grows in the cold forests of Canada and the northern United States. Native peoples used the gum and inner bark as chewing gum, food and a drink. Settlers brewed spruce beer from the twigs. Homeopaths tested the remedy on healthy people in the 1800s. American writers such as Edwin Hale wrote it up for stomach and heart symptoms. It has stayed a small remedy, used far less than staples such as Nux vomica.

Helps

What does Abies nigra help with? Indigestion after a heavy meal: This is the main use in homeopathic books. Writers describe fullness and pain hours after eating, often after rich or late food. No human trials have tested Abies nigra for indigestion, so this rests on old case notes only. A feeling of a hard lump in the stomach: The old texts call it a sense of a hard-boiled egg sitting in the stomach. It is the symptom most linked to this remedy. There is no trial evidence that the remedy changes it. Hiccups: Listed in 19th century homeopathic writing alongside wind and fullness. Nothing has been tested in people. Hiccups that last more than 48 hours need a doctor, not a remedy. Wind and belching: Traditional homeopathic use only. No published human study looks at this remedy for gas or belching. Trouble sleeping in older adults: Old texts mention poor sleep with stomach upset in older people. No sleep trials exist for this remedy. Ongoing sleep trouble is worth discussing with your doctor. Heart flutters that come with indigestion: Homeopathic authors linked stomach upset to a fluttering or skipping heartbeat. This is the riskiest claim on the list. Chest pain, pressure or an uneven heartbeat needs urgent medical care, not a homeopathic remedy.

Where it comes from:

Black spruce grows in the cold forests of Canada and the northern United States.

Who should avoid Abies nigra?

  • Do not use if you have chest pain, pressure in your chest, or a heartbeat that races or skips — get medical help straight away instead.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of stopping or cutting back a medicine your doctor prescribed; keep taking it and speak to your doctor first.
  • Do not use if you have stomach pain that will not go away, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stools, trouble swallowing, or weight loss you cannot explain — see a doctor.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to spruce, pine or fir trees, and take extra care with the mother tincture (the plant extract before it is watered down).
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol, or are taking disulfiram (a drug for alcohol dependence) or metronidazole (an antibiotic) — the liquid drops contain alcohol.
  • Do not use if you have galactosaemia (a rare inherited problem with handling milk sugar) or cannot tolerate lactose (milk sugar), because the pills are made with it.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife agrees.
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby under one year old without medical advice.
  • Do not use if you are treating a fever, breathing trouble or dehydration (loss of body fluids) in a child — these need a doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your indigestion does not settle within a week, keeps coming back, or wakes you at night.

Get medical help the same day for repeated vomiting, black or bloody stools, trouble swallowing, or weight loss you did not plan.

Call emergency services for chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or a heartbeat that races or skips. These can be signs of a heart attack. Do not wait to see if a remedy helps.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
