Throbbing pain on one side of head
The pain sits mostly on one side. It beats or pounds, often in time with your pulse. Light, sound, or moving your head can make it worse.
One-sided throbbing head pain is often a migraine. Nerves and blood vessels in the head become overly stirred up. Some people feel sick to the stomach, or see spots and zigzag lines first.
Many things can set off an attack. Common ones are broken sleep, skipped meals, stress, hormone shifts, and bright light. A tight neck or clenched jaw plays a part for some people.
When to see someone
Get help right away if the pain hits like a thunderclap, at full force in seconds. Same if you have fever with a stiff neck, weakness, slurred speech, or trouble seeing. See a doctor soon for pain after a knock to the head, a new pattern after age 50, or attacks that keep getting worse.
Below are remedies that people have long used for migraine. Each one has an evidence grade, which shows how much solid research exists for it. A grade is not a promise of results, and this page is not medical advice.
