Soaking through a pad every hour
You put on a fresh pad. An hour later it is soaked again. Some days you plan everything around the next change, and you may double up with a tampon.
Bleeding this heavy has many possible causes. Fibroids and polyps are growths in the womb that can add to the flow. Thyroid trouble, clotting disorders, some birth control, and a copper coil are other common reasons.
Your stage of life matters too. Heavy months are common in the first years of periods and in the years before they stop. Losing this much blood can also drop your iron, which may leave you tired, pale, or short of breath.
When to see someone
Call your doctor the same day if you soak a pad or tampon every hour for more than two hours in a row. Go to urgent care or the emergency room for clots bigger than a golf ball, feeling faint or dizzy, a racing heart, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Book a visit soon if you bleed between periods, after sex, or after menopause, and go straight in if you are pregnant and bleeding.
The list below gathers remedies that people have long used during heavy periods. Each one carries an evidence grade, which shows how much good research exists on it. A grade is not a promise of results, so bring the list to your doctor before you try anything, especially if you take medicine.
