Really hurts to swallow anything
Every swallow stings. Even water, or just your own spit, can feel like glass going down. The pain may shoot up into one ear.
Your tonsils sit at the back of the throat, one on each side. When they swell, the space gets tight and raw. You may see red lumps or white spots there, and feel tender bumps in your neck.
Most of the time a virus is behind it, like a cold or the flu. Strep bacteria can do it too. Dry air, smoke, shouting, or acid from the stomach can make a sore throat feel worse.
When to see someone
Get help fast if you cannot swallow your own spit. Drooling, trouble breathing, a stiff neck, or a muffled voice all need care right now. Call a doctor for a high fever, white pus on the tonsils, one side swelling far more than the other, or pain that drags past three days.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies people have used for sore, swollen tonsils. Each one carries a grade that shows how much good research stands behind it. A high grade means more study, not a promise, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before you try any of them.
