Heart pounding when I stand up
You get up from a chair or bed, and your heart takes off. It may pound, race, or flutter in your chest. Many people feel dizzy, shaky, warm, or a bit foggy at the same time.
When you stand, blood pools down in your legs. Your heart then beats faster to push it back up. In some people that speed-up is too big, so you feel every beat.
Many things can set this off: heat, low fluids, a long illness, blood loss, or some drugs. If it keeps coming back, doctors may test for POTS. POTS means your heart rate jumps too much each time you stand.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you faint or nearly faint when you stand. Get help right away for chest pain, trouble breathing at rest, or a heart that will not slow. Call your doctor if this is new, is getting worse, or comes with fever, black stools, or fast weight loss.
The list below holds remedies that people ask about for this kind of complaint. Each one has a grade for how strong the research is, not a promise of any result. Talk with your doctor before you try one, above all if you take heart or blood pressure drugs.
