Cough that won't stop at night
You lie down, and the cough starts. It comes in fits, often dry and tickly. Some nights it keeps you awake for hours.
A night cough can be a main sign of asthma. The small airways in your lungs get tight and puffy. Lying flat, cold air, dust, and pets can all set it off.
Other things cause night cough too. Colds, reflux (stomach acid coming up), and drip from the nose are common ones. Some blood pressure pills do it as well.
When to see someone
Get urgent help if you fight for breath, can't speak in full sentences, or your lips look blue or grey. See a doctor soon if you cough up blood, run a fever, lose weight, or wake gasping most nights. Book a check if the cough lasts more than three weeks, or if your inhaler runs out fast.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies that people have used for night cough linked to asthma. Each one has an evidence grade, which shows how much research has looked at it. A low grade means the proof is thin, not that the remedy has been ruled out.
