Belly swells up after eating
Your belly may look flat in the morning. Then a meal goes in, and it feels tight and full. Your waistband digs in, and you may want to undo a button.
Most of this swelling is gas in your gut. Some of that gas is air you swallow while you eat, drink, or talk. The rest is made by gut bugs as they break down your food.
Big meals, fizzy drinks, chewing gum, and eating fast can all add to it. Beans, onions, wheat, dairy, and some sweeteners make extra gas in many people. The bloat often builds through the day and settles by morning.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your belly stays swollen when you have not eaten, or is bloated most days for three weeks. Get checked for weight loss you did not plan, blood or black stool, vomiting, trouble swallowing, or new bloating after age 50. Seek same-day care for severe pain with a hard, tender belly.
Below are traditional and home remedies that people have used for gas and bloating. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the research behind it is. A grade is not a promise, so talk your plan over with a doctor or pharmacist.
