Veratrum album

A long-standing staple of one tradition (traditional tier T2), but the evidence grade is insufficient: no trial separates it from placebo.

What is Veratrum album? Veratrum album is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from white hellebore, a tall mountain plant with white flowers. Homeopaths give it for sudden weakness with cold sweat, watery stools and vomiting. The raw plant is a poison. To make the remedy, the root is soaked in alcohol, then watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. At the usual 30C strength, none of the plant is left in the pills. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill (placebo). White hellebore has a long place in homeopathy. But long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. How does Veratrum album work? Nothing from the plant is in a 30C pill, so there is no known way for it to act on your body. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a thing that causes signs in a well person is said to treat those same signs in a sick one. White hellebore causes vomiting, cold sweat and collapse, so homeopaths pick it for those states. The second idea is that water keeps a trace of what was once in it. Chemistry gives no support for this. People who feel better after the pills are most likely feeling the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to), or simply getting well on their own. What forms does Veratrum album come in? Most shops sell small sugar pills at 6C, 30C or 200C. You can also buy liquid drops, and most of those are made with alcohol. The mother tincture is the raw plant extract. It is a poison, not a home product. Many countries limit or ban its sale. Where it comes from: White hellebore has a long record as both a medicine and a poison. Greek and Roman writers used it to make people vomit. Hunters in the Alps once tipped arrows with it. Samuel Hahnemann, who began homeopathy, tested it on healthy people in the early 1800s. Homeopaths used it widely during the cholera outbreaks of the 1830s. It has stayed a staple of the homeopathic kit since then.

Helps

What does Veratrum album help with? Watery diarrhoea with cold sweat: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to the remedy: loose watery stools, cold skin, cold sweat on the forehead and great weakness. No human trial has tested this remedy for this problem. Sudden heavy watery diarrhoea can dry you out fast and can be life-threatening, so it needs fluids and a doctor, not pills. Vomiting with chills and weakness: Homeopaths pick it when vomiting comes with cold hands and feet and a strong thirst for cold drinks. There is no trial evidence that it shortens vomiting or helps you keep fluids down. Standard care is small sips of rehydration fluid and medical advice if you cannot keep anything down. Feeling faint or collapsing: Old homeopathic texts describe this remedy for sudden collapse with a weak pulse and cold, damp skin. This use has never been tested in a human trial. Collapse with a weak pulse is an emergency. Call for help first; do not treat it at home. Period pain with vomiting or faintness: Some homeopaths use it for cramping period pain when the person also feels sick, sweaty and faint. We found no human trial of this remedy for period pain. If your periods make you faint or vomit, ask your doctor to look for a cause. Cramps in the legs during a stomach bug: Cramps in the calves alongside diarrhoea are part of the picture homeopaths match to this remedy. There is no trial evidence here either. Bad cramps with diarrhoea can be a sign that your body salts are low, which is a reason to get checked.

Where it comes from:

White hellebore has a long record as both a medicine and a poison.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Veratrum album need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Veratrum album?

  • Do not use if you have been offered the mother tincture or any strength below 4X or 3C — never swallow raw white hellebore or these low dilutions, because they can slow or stop your heart
  • Do not use if you have picked the plant yourself; white hellebore is easily mistaken for yellow gentian or wild garlic, and eating it has killed people
  • Do not use if you have sudden heavy watery diarrhoea, vomiting and cold sweat — that needs urgent medical care and fluids, not pills
  • Do not use if you have a heart-rhythm problem (an uneven or very slow heartbeat) and are being offered anything other than a high dilution
  • Do not use if you take heart or blood pressure medicine and the product is a tincture or a low strength
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby, a young child or a frail older person for vomiting or diarrhoea — get medical help instead
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a doctor who knows the exact product says it is fine
  • Do not use if you would delay, stop or replace a treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) and the pills are made with lactose
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol, including on disulfiram or metronidazole, and the product is alcohol-based drops

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help now if you or someone else has swallowed the raw plant, the mother tincture or a low strength. Warning signs are a very slow or uneven heartbeat, heavy vomiting, numbness around the mouth, dizziness, fainting or fits.

Call a doctor the same day for signs of drying out: little or no urine, sunken eyes, a dry mouth, a fast heartbeat, or a child who is floppy and hard to wake.

Also see a doctor if diarrhoea or vomiting lasts more than two days, if there is blood in your stool, or if you have a high fever with belly pain.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
