Saúco is elder. In Cuba and the Dominican Republic the name usually points to Sambucus canadensis, the American elder. Home use centres on the small white flowers, dried and steeped as a tea.
The tea is a warm, faintly sweet drink. Families have reached for it during fevers, colds, coughs and chills. Some also drink it for a mild upset stomach.
Here is the honest verdict. Human studies on elder flower tea are very thin. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works, and it is not proof that it is safe.
One more point matters more than any claim. The green parts of the elder plant and the raw berries are not food. Only the flowers belong in the cup.
No one has shown how saúco tea works in people. What follows comes from lab work and from tradition, not from proof.
The old claim is that hot elder flower tea brings on a sweat and "breaks" a fever. Any hot drink can warm you and make you sweat. No good trial shows that elder adds to that.
In test tube studies, elder flavonoids soak up free radicals and lower some markers of swelling. In cell studies, elderberry extracts slow flu virus from entering cells. Whether a cup of flower tea does any of this inside your body is not known.
Animal work hints at a small drop in blood sugar. That has not been confirmed in people.
The usual Caribbean form is loose dried flowers, sold by weight in markets and botánicas.
Other forms you may meet:
- Tea bags of dried elder flower, often mixed with lime or mint - Elder flower cordial or syrup, a sweet drink base - Tinctures, which are alcohol extracts in a dropper bottle - Capsules of dried flower powder - Cooked elderberry syrups and lozenges, which use the fruit, not the flower - Skin washes and gargles made from cooled tea
Fruit products and flower products are not the same thing. Most of the research people quote was done on berry extracts.
Elder has a long record on both sides of the Atlantic. European settlers brought elder lore to the Caribbean, where it met local bush tea habits. The American elder growing in the region took the same name and the same role.
In Cuban and Dominican homes, elder flower tea was a standard remedy for fiebre and catarro, meaning fever and head colds. It was often sweetened and drunk hot, sometimes with lime.
Healers also used cooled tea as a face or eye wash. These are records of what people did in the past. They are not a recommendation to treat yourself the same way.
Stop the tea and see a doctor if you vomit, cramp badly or have watery diarrhoea after taking it. That pattern suggests green plant parts or raw berries got into the mix.
Get urgent help for any sign of a serious allergy. This means swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, a spreading rash, or trouble breathing.
Also see a doctor if the illness itself is not settling. Warning signs include:
- A fever lasting more than three days, or above 39C - Shortness of breath or chest pain - A stiff neck or a bad headache with the fever - Confusion, or being hard to wake - A child who is not drinking, or has far fewer wet nappies - Any fever in a baby under three months
In the United States, elder flower is sold as a food and as a dietary supplement. It is not approved there as a medicine for any illness. In the European Union, elder flower is listed as a traditional herbal medicine, a status based on long use rather than trial proof. In Cuba and the Dominican Republic it is sold freely as a household tea.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
